New appointment for Spin360

Italian company appointed by UNIDO to establish Leather Environmental Footprint Guidelines

Spin360, the global player specialised in innovative science-based solutions, continues to work with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to address the issue of the leather industry’s environmental footprint. The new project appoints Spin360 to establish harmonised Leather Environmental Footprint Guidelines for a leather life cycle assessment (LCA) as the industry moves towards a global agreement on key methodological developments and to create a Carbon Footprint tool for tanneries.

The project has been created in response to the urgent need for common action to harmonise the requirements and methodologies used to calculate the environmental impact of the leather industry, on a global scale. As the fashion and automotive industries are coming under increasing pressure to reduce their Scope 3 Carbon Footprint, there is growing demand to develop systems for calculating Product Environmental Footprint based on high quality LCA data with a uniform methodology. This cooperation aims to tackle the industry’s main challenges, including a lack of comprehensive primary data to assess leather’s LCA and the difficulty in addressing environmental footprints due to the different methodologies used.

The project began at the start of 2024 and involves a comprehensive analysis of all existing LCA standards, the development of a proposal for harmonisation, the discussion of the proposal with a selection of global stakeholders and the final issuing of the harmonised guidelines. It will also include the creation of a Corporate Carbon Footprint Tool for tanneries. Based on Spin360’s experience, the tool offers a comprehensive solution for measuring environmental impact throughout the life cycle of leather, including upstream processes, main operations, use and end of life. The tool aims to simplify and standardise carbon footprint calculations within the industry, facilitating informed decision-making and sustainable practice.

Federico Brugnoli, CEO and founder of Spin360, says, “We are honoured to work once again with UNIDO on developing standardised methodologies and guidelines. Our aim is to help the leather industry cut its environmental impact and contribute towards sustainable development goals.” Ivan Kral, Industrial Development Officer at UNIDO, says, “UNIDO is very pleased to support this global harmonisation process, which is a real necessity for the leather industry and for all related sectors up and downstream.” By joining forces, Spin360 and UNIDO are committing to promote significant progress in the leather industry, focusing on environmental sustainability and global cooperation in the pursuit of shared goals.
