Brazilian leather
at international trade shows

First stops India and United States

Brazilian leather was front and centre at the first two trade shows of the year: Lineapelle New York (31 January – 1 February) and India International Leather Fair (IILF from 1 to 3 February) in Chennai. Participation was backed by Brazilian Leather, an exports initiative developed by the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil).

Thirteen tanning companies attended the US event – Brazil‘s largest turnout at any international event outside Asia, reinforcing the importance of the United States as a key market. Indeed, in 2023 alone, the United States accounted for 16% of all leather exported by Brazilian tanning companies, making it its second largest market. Sales were mainly for finished leathers. “This kind of leather is the main focus of Lineapelle New York, which brings together big brands and new designers working in niche markets and big retail,” says Leticia Luft, the Manager of the Brazilian Leather project. The Indian event was attended by four tanning companies as well as having a Brazilian Leather corporate stand.

IILF is one of the fairs that was forced to take a long break during the pandemic, only resuming last year. The 2023 edition was very positive for Brazilian leather so we decided to attend in even greater numbers in 2024,” says Bianca Corrêa, from the Brazilian leather trade promotion area. India is the world’s sixth largest footwear exporter in terms of quantity and the eleventh in terms of value.
