What are the main steps you have taken towards sustainability?
Our company developed a real culture of sustainability years ago. The care we put into creating our products is the same that guides us in taking action to protect the environment, people and animals. This is why we have developed the Going Green programme, which covers all key sectors of sustainability. We recently obtained Advanced level recognition for 3 initiatives in the 4sustainability® Roadmap Framework, which are: 4s CHEM, demonstrating our commitment to eliminate toxic and harmful chemicals to safeguard human health – workers and consumers – and the environment, by adopting the ZDHC methodology; 4s MATERIALS, meaning we prioritise sustainable products and raw materials and have developed a system for tracking volumes; 4s PEOPLE, showing our focus on the central importance of people in our business model.
What is your approach towards eco certifications?
It isn’t a perfect system and there is no shortage of inconsistencies and management issues, but we believe it is the most effective way to highlight the sustainability of our products and processes, so we have invested heavily in it: the materials used by Lanificio dell’Olivo are guaranteed by a number of certifications that is unparalleled in the sector and that adds more structure to our offering of eco-compatible yarns. Today we can add RAS (Responsible Alpaca Standard) certification and I think we are the first spinning company in Italy to have quantities of responsible alpaca available to our clients.
How do you communicate your ‘green’ policies?
Sustainability is one of the three strategic pillars of the company, alongside Service and Made in Italy. We have made the conscious choice to move in this direction and we communicate this to our clients through our user-friendly, functional website. Recent recognitions are also published in the 4sustainability® E-Report, which is a veritable sustainability passport updated every year, a document that provides stakeholders with assurances on transparency and continual improvement.
