Pop fusion | Season Trends
This theme blends Japanese culture with colourful accents with a pop flavour. Traditional Asian rigour, measure and dosing of every ingredient are sprinkled with little ornamental touches, moderated with discretion. The input comes from food: Moritsuke is the Japanese art of arranging food with a balance of solids and voids, in a bid to create an ideal harmony of shapes and colours from the food on the plate. Wagashi, the traditional confections, are another fusion of aesthetic perfection and formal precision, using colour arrangements that follow the seasons, inviting calm and spirituality. Little pieces are artfully combined, at times generating symmetry, at others imbalance and disparity. Beautiful nerikiri (desserts eaten during the tea ceremony), delicious mochi (filled rice cakes) and rice crackers are set out in disciplined arrangements. The objects appear in balance, the positions, seemingly random, are not at all; everything is in its place, creating a refined and harmonious dialogue of elements. Opaque textures, sticky transparencies, glossy toppers, thick and chewy effects, like designer cotton cakes, create an impeccable ornamental style. Normally over-the-top kitsch details – like neon-tinted decorated extensions or locally-made Pokémon ceramic figurines – are perfectly balanced with the rest, generating an elegant and refined fusion language.
